Installer

One of the major issues with many programs and most operating system enhancements has always been the difficulty of installation. A few programs have been introduced to assist with setting up QL boot files. Additionally ProWesS adds a basic installer to their package which has gone a long way towards helping the situation.

QDT attempts to take it a step further. This is not only a convenient capability but is necessary due to both the data structure requirements that QDT uses along with its attempt to integrate different preexisting capabilities into itself. It would not be realistic to expect the average user to understand all the requirements and to take the time to set things to fully take advantage of the QDT benefits.

The QDT installer does several things for the user during installation.

Performs the QDT installation - automatically or user assisted
Sets up the desktop - automatically or with user assistance
Sets up required directories, variables, data structures
Modifies boot file as necessary
Scans boot file and hard drive for

hints to preferences
existing programs
existing graphics directories
preexisting QDT desktops

The installer will also be able to take in an installer data base to allow it to be used with other programs. The data base structure will be made available to other program authors.

Since many updates will be made available, it is important to make updating easy and also to preserve the user's configuration. The updater detects prior installations and provides options to do simple/quick updates.

Eight screen captures from the installer in action are shown here. Clicking on an individual image will display the full sized image in this window. Use the browser BACK button on the menu on the left to return to this frame. The final item is a desktop generated automatically by the installer.
